What is Kairos?
Kairos is an intense ten-week summer program, tUsershe aim of which is to prepare talented college students to be effective at ministry in and through the marketplace. Students will live and process life, work, and scripture together. They will work paid internships at top companies with on-the-job mentors and influencers. They will train through academic readings and discussions as well as through dialogue with professionals in business, communications, and missions.
Where do students live?
In Summer 2010 students lived together at the Chi Alpha house at the University of Arkansas. In 2011, many students had active leases, and remained at their residence. Out-of-town students lived together at Woodway Apartments, a property outreach of Lightbearers Ministries. The Kairos advisors work with students to coordinate the best avenue for each student's housing for the summer.
Where do students work?
Northwest Arkansas is a major hub for retail, logistics, and food companies, as well as many businesses that support these industries. We have and are developing many business partners, and students may hold internships at major corporations (e.g., J.B. Hunt Transport, Inc.) or local entrepreneurial enterprises (e.g., NorthStar Partnering Group, Acumen Brands, Inc., etc.).
How do I get an internship?
You can get an internship in one of two ways: independently or through Kairos. If you get an internship independently and would like to apply for Kairos, that is certainly an option, and we will work with your employer to make sure that you are available for all Kairos events. Kairos can also help place you in an internship. We will work with you to understand your objectives and skills and connect you with several interviews with employer partners that could be a good potential fit. We connect most students to their internships.
What is the training program?
Training consists of two major pieces – Thursday Roundtables and Saturday Training – that are then integrated and practiced in the context of the daily internship. Thursday Roundtables are based on a curriculum including leadership and communication, business skill, theology of work, and business as missions, and consist of weekly readings, reflections, and a dinner and discussion on the content. Saturday Trainings are two-three hour sessions with professionals who have experience in the curriculum: sales masters from Procter and Gamble, entrepreneurs who have built companies, and professionals who are leading business and missions enterprises, just to name a few.
How are students mentored?
Students will the opportunity to build relationships and learn primarily from mentors on the job and the Kairos staff. Students will also have the opportunity to interact personally with hosts of Thursday Roundtables and speakers on Saturday Training.
How much does Kairos cost?
The total cost of Kairos is $2,000, and this includes all programming, resources, and staff compensation. If room and board are needed, living expenses will vary.
Why does Kairos charge tuition?
Kairos is much more than an internship; it is an intentionally designed program that introduces a few students each year to top professionals, exposes them to a real-world environment, takes them through the equivalent of a three hour college class, and facilitates retreats, events, and an array of mentoring opportunities. Each of these things has an implicit cost, and we aim to compensate the staff that facilitates and executes the project a fair wage.
What are the social nights described on the calendar?
To promote fellowship among the Kairos interns, social nights are scheduled weekly. In the past, these have included Concerts in the Park, Arkansas Naturals baseball games, pool parties, and more!
