Workmatters Merit Scholarships

1st Lieutenant John Boyett Memorial Leadership Scholarship

The 1st LT John Boyett Memorial Leadership Scholarship fund was created to honor the values and ideals of John Boyett to the glory of God. This merit-based scholarship goes to deserving professionals who desire in-depth leadership and career development from a faith-based perspective. To honor John’s memory and the 240 other servicemen who lost their lives, preference will be given towards military veterans or active military. However, it is not a requirement to receive the scholarship. All are welcome to apply, and all are encouraged to give.

Workmatters is excited to announce the 2022 WMI-Arkansas merit scholarship recipients. These recipients exhibit leadership ability in their work and a willingness to take a leadership role within their respective Workmatters Institute cohort. They have demonstrated a high capacity for leadership, integrity and character.

These scholarships are possible because of the vision and generosity of three key donors and their families. We are grateful for the legacy of transformational leadership and kingdom impact that they will have through Chris, Lara, and Haven.

1st LT John Boyett Memorial Leadership Scholarship

Chris McKinney, Plant Manager at George’s Inc.

“Life and work are not just about meeting a goal – it should be about excellence,” said Chris. “I hope to build a legacy of love and excellence in my current role.”

What Chris’ peers say about him:
During the time that I’ve known him he has always put his faith at the forefront of his leadership style. He is an excellent communicator and has always treated his team members with dignity and respect. It’s not always easy to balance faith with driving for results in the workplace. It’s also not easy balancing faith and holding people accountable for performance. In my experience with Chris, he’s always been able to handle these things very easily. Chris is not ashamed of being a Christian and he lets his light shine in the workplace where he can be an effective witness for Christ.

The 1st LT John Boyett Memorial Leadership Scholarship is an endowed merit scholarship given in memory of 1st LT John Boyett. John was killed along with 240 other servicemen in a terrorist attack in Beirut, Lebanon on Oct 23, 1983. The intent of this scholarship is to fund an outstanding candidate in each Workmatters Institute class. The recipient not only embodies the values of 1st LT John Boyett, but also is passionate about living into Christ’s redemptive and transformative purposes in the marketplace. Lara Bates, Operations Manager Mars Petcare Inbound at Transplace

“I want to see my work as a privilege to further the Kingdom of Christ and not just as something I must do to provide for my family,” said Lara. “I hope to get a mindset shift… To be renewed by the transformation of my mind and thus affect real change for myself, my family, and others for God’s glory and purpose.”

What Lara’s peers say about her:
During our time working together, I have experienced Lara to be an individual who consistently shows up earlier than asked, works harder than anyone else, carries herself in a polite, respectful, and professional manner, and, most importantly, demonstrates the love of Jesus and the Gospel message in the corporate environment. Leadership, passion, servanthood, and unwavering faith in Jesus Christ are the pillars of the foundation upon which she stands, and it is my great honor to recommend her for this opportunity.

Haven Jaggers, Lead Cardiac Rehab Liaison RN at Arkansas Heart Hospital

“I want to make a difference in my workplace for Christ,” said Haven. “I want to do it alongside other young professionals who desire to grow spiritually as well. I believe in the importance of integrity, strong character, and setting an example for others.”

What Haven’s peers say about her:
Haven is compassionate, kind, positive, and empathetic. She demonstrates great patience and care. I can’t say enough about her, she has the best attitude and work ethic. Our patients love her. One patient even said, “I would go back and have another surgery just to be cared for by Haven.”
