12 Life Lessons You Can Learn From Masters Champion Scottie Scheffler

Through the significant generosity of a friend, I was blessed to take my son to the 2022 Masters in Augusta, Georgia this past weekend.

It’s difficult to describe the significance of the Masters experience at the Augusta National Golf Club. It is like no other.

Not a golf fan? Stay with me!

Late Sunday night, my son Tyler (who co-wrote this blog with me) and I watched the press conference featuring the new Masters champion, Scottie Scheffler. In 25 minutes of answering questions from the global press corps, Scottie said and modeled more about living a Godly life than most books do! It moved me to want to be a better man, husband, father, friend, and leader. I hope it will for you, as well.

12 Life Lessons You Can Learn From Masters Champion Scottie Scheffler

  1. Who are you surrounding yourself with?
    • Scottie described his caddie (coworker) – “I respect him so much as a person (first) and caddie (second). He’s a man of faith and I love him. He embodies the qualities you look for in a person – humble, honest, hardworking, a good time to be around”. These words highlight how we often become like people we spend time with, especially in our inner circle.
  2. Are you living your life one day at a time?
    • “I stay in the present, not looking too far in the future, and try to enjoy the moment.”
  3. Do you have perspective?
    • “The human condition is to make things bigger than they really are.”
  4. Are you intentional about watching other leaders and learning?
    • “I grew up watching them and learning from them.”
  5. Are you self-aware (perhaps with some humor)?
    • “I wanted to play golf on the PGA tour. I wore long pants and a collared shirt in my third-grade class and got made fun of. Rightfully so!”
  6. Do you work with excellence?
    • “I just kept practicing and working hard and that’s what I’m going to keep doing. I’m just trying to do my best.”
  7. What does it look like to have confident and honest vulnerability?
    • “I cried like a baby this morning. I was so stressed out. I didn’t know what to do. I was telling my wife Meredith, I don’t think I’m ready for this. I just felt overwhelmed. She told me,who are you to say you’re not ready.” And we discussed that God is in control and leading me. If I shot 82 today, somehow, I would use it for his glory.
  8. How’s your sense of humor?
    • Throughout the interview, Scottie never took himself too seriously, continually looking for a way to lighten things up.
  9. Are you unapologetic about your faith?
    • “My faith affects all aspects of my life. The Lord has given me a skill and I’m trying to use it to glorify God and all that he’s done in my life.”
  10. Where is your identity?
    • “My identity isn’t a golf score. Meredith told me if you win this golf tournament today or if you lose by 10 shots, I’m still going to love you and you’re still going to be the same person. Jesus still loves you.”
  11. What does family mean to you?
    • He found ways to talk about his three sisters and golf, his dad and the music he likes, how his parents co-parented well with his mom working as an attorney and his dad staying at home with the kids. “They did the best they could raising us and I love them for that.”
  12. How is your marriage?
    • “Every day I play, [my wife] Meredith always prays for peace, because that’s what I want to feel, to have peace, to have fun, and to feel His presence. And I felt that today.” I see transparency, mutual faith, dependence on each other, commitment to each other and joyful sense of humor.

So, who are you becoming? I hope these 12 life lessons from Scottie can help guide you in the days, weeks, years to come. May we all see life and work, both the stressors and the successes, through our faith lens.
