Is it OK to Express My Faith at Work?

While more and more people are finding ways to express their faith at work, there are still many more who have concerns about whether it is acceptable or not. And if it is acceptable, what is appropriate? How can we express our faith in the workplace?

Thanks to heightened sensitivity to a diverse workforce, corporate policies and laws are increasingly supportive of employees who want to express their faith at work, provided it does not cause hardship to the company and does not impinge upon the beliefs of others. For example, it shouldn’t hinder productivity, nor should others have to endure unwelcome proselytizing.

It’s even become easier to find companies that are faith-friendly. Examples include Chick-fil-A, Hobby Lobby, Interstate Batteries, Tyson Foods, Cracker Barrel, Walmart, Dillard’s and American Express. You may be interested to know that there is an increase in faith-based employee resource groups (ERGs) throughout corporate America to support employees in connecting with others who share the same faith. American Express has one of the largest Christian ERGs, with over 2,000 members across the country. Ford, Texas Instruments, Coca-Cola, Toyota, American Airlines, CDC, HP, AOL, Aetna, Fiat, Chrysler and EMC are among the many others that also offer these ERGs.

What can you do to express your faith at work? Here are some ideas:

  • Display faith-based encouragement at work: Having reminders of inspirational Scriptures, a daily devotional or a Bible at your desk can provide the extra encouragement to help you deal with demands and get through the tough challenges at work. They just might encourage others who come by your work space, as well.
  • Include your faith in conversation with coworkers: When you talk about activities outside of work, include your involvement at church, in Bible study, small group activities and volunteer service. Share what you’re learning about God, and what He is doing in your life.
  • Offer to pray for and with others at work: Many people appreciate the offer of prayer, even when their beliefs are different than yours. If you feel moved to pray with someone in the moment, be sure to ask their permission. You may be surprised at the positive response you get when you offer to pray for someone who is struggling.
  • Take time to pray throughout the work day: The Bible tells us to “pray continually” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18). This doesn’t mean you need to be on your knees all day. It does mean to pause regularly and ask God for guidance, wisdom and direction. Then thank Him when He helps you, and celebrate answered prayer with others. Praying over your work will help you produce better results and keep you centered.

Research has shown that companies can expect positive results and increased contribution to company growth when employees feel the freedom to express their faith at work in appropriate ways. More importantly, it will make a huge difference in your work and quite possibly in the lives of those you influence. So feel free to express your faith at work and enjoy God’s presence all day, every day (Psalm 16:11).
